2024 Chevy Silverado EV vs Chevy Silverado Towing Capacity

There is nobody more excited to see the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV arrive at our showroom than the Budds’ Chev product experts. It’s pretty clear that the electrified Silverado platform will be a game-changer. However, people are likely to have a lot of questions about the new truck, and we’d like to get ahead of them. One of the most likely concerns people may have about the 2024 Silverado EV is its towing capacity compared to the traditional Silverado with a gasoline engine. Let’s take a closer look at some things you should know.

How Much Will the 2024 Silverado EV Tow?

Hybrid technology has vastly improved in the 20-plus years it has been available in the automotive industry. A lot of platforms have used this technology to reduce the stops they need to make at the gas station.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is solely powered by a series of electric motors that will make up to an estimated 660 horsepower and 780 pound-feet of torque, impressive figures by any measure. A gas-powered 2022 Silverado set up to produce the most performance possible will employ a 6.2-litre, V-8 engine, making 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. So, how do these numbers translate into towing capacity?

 Turbo., 2.7-L, 4-Cyl. 5.3-L, V-8  6.2-L, V-8  Front/Rear Electric Motors
Horsepower  310 355 420 660
Torque (lb.-ft.) 420 383 460 780
Max. Towing (kg/lbs.) 4,354 / 9,600 5,034 / 9,600 5,488 / 13,300 4,534 / 10,000

Chevrolet has said that a fleet-focused version of the Silverado EV will be available to commercial buyers in the familiar WT trim grade. That version of the electrified Silverado will have a maximum towing capacity almost double that of the RST consumer-focused version.

Why are Electric Trucks so Good at Towing?

There are a lot of factors that go into determining how much a given vehicle can safely tow. As it applies to performance specs, it’s torque, not horsepower, that is the key factor. Electric vehicles, like the Silverado EV, use electric motors to deliver power to the wheels. Because the truck’s electric motors are attached to the axles, that power is delivered to the wheels all but instantly, providing incredible amounts of torque.

Gasoline-powered engines send the power they create through several steps before it arrives at the wheels, putting them at a disadvantage when compared to electric platforms.
