2023 GMC Sierra EV Preview
Is GMC Going to Make an Electric Sierra Model?
The automotive world has been aflutter with news from Chevrolet and other automakers about coming electric pickup trucks. We have shared what little we know about the Silverado EV in a previous blog post. Since that blog was published, we’ve had several people call the Budds’ Chev showroom to ask if GMC is going to be making an electric version of the Sierra. Yes, they are. The manufacturer released a teaser image and a little information before Christmas 2021. Now that the big auto shows in the United States are kicking off for another year, we are hoping to learn more. Let’s take a closer look at what we may see.
What Will the Sierra EV Have to Offer?
GMC is really tight-lipped about what features the new Sierra EV will offer in terms of performance and other capabilities. We really only know a couple of details about the electric Sierra. First, it will be built using the same platform as the Hummer EV and Silverado EV. Next, we know that it will only be available in the top-of-the-line Denali trim grade. That means it will be packed with the latest technology and some of the finest interior materials and accents in the full-size pickup truck segment.
“Sierra Denali holds tremendous equity for GMC and our customers,” Duncan Aldred, GMC vice president, said in a press release. “We now have an opportunity to evolve Sierra’s capabilities and technologies, as afforded by transitioning to an all-electric propulsion while also elevating the luxurious design and comfort associated with Denali.”
2023 GMC Sierra EV Performance Estimates
The official performance specs for the 2023 GMC Sierra EV won’t be available until the truck is unveiled to the public, reportedly set to happen in the first half of 2022. However, since we know that GMC will be leveraging Ultium technology, like the new electric Hummer and Silverado EV, it seems likely that the Sierra EV will fall somewhere on that spectrum.
Chevy has said that the Silverado EV will make up to 664 horsepower and offer up more than 4,500 kg of towing capacity. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is reported by the automaker to make as much as 1,000 horsepower and has a towing capacity breaking the 5,200 kg mark.
