How Does the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Handle?
How Does the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Handle?
The original civilian Hummer has one of the most interesting stories in the automotive industry. It was developed from a military vehicle and became a toy for people who like big toys. As global gas prices rose in the early years of the 21st century, the Hummer was taken out of production. GMC is reviving Hummer as an SUV, as well as a pickup truck, for the 2024 model year — but as a 1,000-horsepower electric vehicle. That is impressive on its own, but there is still a burning question Budds’ Chevy customers have; how does the 2024 GMC Hummer EV handle? We haven’t had a chance to get behind the wheel of one yet, but we are encouraged by some new information.

Can the Hummer EV Go Off-Road?
Nobody should be fooled into thinking that just because the new Hummer platform has done away with gasoline- or diesel-powered powertrains that it lacks serious capabilities. When the 2024 Hummer arrives at Budds’ Chevy, new owners will be able to travel directly from the showroom to their favourite off-road trails, with no stops in between. In fact, the manufacturer has put Hummer through its off-road paces on the challenging trails in Moab, Utah – one of the most unforgiving off-road driving environments in the world. Some of the systems that were being tested in the Utah desert include:
- Adaptive Air Suspension
- Extract Mode
- Terrain Mode
- One-Pedal Driving
- CrabWalk
All of the GMC fans working at Budds’ Chevy cannot wait to take a closer look at each of these features.
How Does the Hummer Do on the Highway?
The military ancestry of the original Hummer platform might have made the platform less-than-ideal on surface streets or the highway. None of that will be a problem with the 2024 Hummer EV. First-hand accounts of automotive journalists getting a chance to drive the new Hummer platform have been on the rare side. However, the information we did find had a lot of positive things to say about taking the vehicle out on the open road. More than one early test drive testimonial reported that the Hummer EV is as pleasing to drive on almost any road surface.
One of the most lauded features that will be standard equipment with the 2024 Hummer EV is four-wheel steering. The back wheels can turn up to 10 degrees in either direction to help the vehicle maneuver more sharply. In extreme uses, the CrabWalk system can be activated to essentially make the vehicle slide left and right – similar to a rear-wheel-drive forklift.
