2013 Canadian National Exhibition: Things to do

Highlights of the 2013 CNE!

The CNE, or Canadian National Exhibition, is a tradition which people of all ages look forward to every year, and have been for generations. The first CNE, or at the time Toronto Industrial Exhibition, was in 1852 and due to great success this year and years to follow it became a permanent, annual fair in 1879.

In my opinion, everyone has a different reason to visit the Ex. There are so many things to do and see that it would be impossible to get to everything. Do some research and write a list of the things that appeal to you most! You can even make a schedule directly from the website! Although everyone will have different lists, this would be mine:

1. Entertainment:

The Air Show: The Canadian International Air Show (CIAS) is always a display that leaves jaws hanging in awe. The Snowbirds will present their spectacle August 31st to September 2nd from 1pm-4:30pm.

Music: A perfect backdrop to the fair, live bands will not only be playing at the Bandshell but all over the Exhibition grounds. With a variety of genres, everyone is sure to find something they enjoy.

Acrobatic Act: Acrobats, circus performers, trapeze, trampoline, and more! This year’s show, Tic Toc, will have a “time” theme.

2. Food & Drink:

Cronut: What’s a cronut, you ask? Croissant pastry, shaped like a donut and deep fried. Also on the menu this year is a cronut burger…. with cronuts as the top and bottom bun. Sounds interesting, but worth a try.

Spice Cream Cone: This sounds most appealing to me, combining some of my favourite things… Pizza crust cone, ice cream, topped with bacon and hot peppers!

Notorious P.I.G. Combo: Weighing in at a whopping 7500 calories, this combo features pork and bacon everything…. including a peanut-butter-bacon milkshake… Hmmm.

Caribbean Rum Tasting: What could wash down the food better than learning about and tasting four different rums from the Caribbean?

3. Rides:

Zip-Line: Zip-lining is a thrill that everyone should experience! The zip-line at the Ex is open to the public and is one of the biggest, starting off at 35 metres high and running 300 metres long!!

Mach 3: An all new carnival ride, taken to the next level. Sit at the end of a 37 metre arm and have it spin you 360 degrees. The Mach 3 produces a g-force of 3.5-g — Now that’s intimidating!

Chevrolet’s Road Coaster: One of the coolest rides at the CNE. Get into a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS and drive it on a virtual roller coaster track… the Road Coaster. Although the car is stationary, it will lift, move and shake as you drive the real steering wheel in front of a huge 80 inch LED screen! Awesome!
